Thousands of British travellers ride scooters in Bali every year, and many of them are not actually covered. The difference comes down to two documents and one line on your licence. Here's what a UK rider needs before renting a scooter in Bali.

What you need as a UK licence holder

DocumentWhy it matters
UK photocard licence with motorcycle entitlement (A, A2 or A1)Proves you're licensed to ride a motorcycle
International Driving Permit (IDP)The translation Indonesian police expect alongside your licence
PassportIdentity at handover and police checks
Travel insurance that covers ridingMedical costs after a crash can be very high

Rules and the IDP type accepted for each country can change, so check the Post Office and UK government travel advice for Indonesia shortly before you travel.

What if I only have a car licence?

  • A category B (car) licence does not give you motorcycle entitlement in Bali, even for a 110 cc scooter.
  • A CBT certificate on its own is not a full motorcycle licence.
  • Riding without the right entitlement can mean a fine at a police check and may void your travel insurance.
  • If you're not covered, consider a car with driver or ride-hailing instead.

Which scooter to rent

ScooterDailyWeeklyMonthly
Honda BeAT (Gen 4–5)IDR 80,000IDR 425,000IDR 1,210,000
Honda Scoopy (Gen 4)IDR 90,000IDR 515,000IDR 1,410,000
Yamaha NMAX 155 (Gen 2)IDR 150,000IDR 902,000IDR 2,260,000

A BeAT or Scoopy is light and easy for town; an NMAX is better for two people and long rides. Book on WhatsApp or via the Bali scooter rental catalogue: the bike is delivered to your hotel or villa and you pay when it arrives.

Keep a photo of your licence, IDP and passport on your phone, and carry the originals when riding.
