Scooter accidents are among the most common reasons travellers in Bali end up in hospital — and medical bills there can be high. Whether your travel insurance pays depends on conditions many people never read. This guide covers what policies usually require. It's general information, not advice on any specific policy.

Conditions most policies set

ConditionWhat it usually meansWhy it matters
Valid motorcycle licenceHome licence with a motorcycle class + IDP with category AThe most common reason claims are refused
HelmetRider and passenger wear helmetsIndonesian law also requires SNI helmets
Engine size limitSome policies only cover up to a certain ccAn XMAX 250 may not be covered
No alcohol or drugsAny amount can void coverPolice and hospitals may test
Moped/motorbike optionSome policies need an add-onCheck it's included before you fly

Before you ride: a five-minute check

  1. Find the motorcycle or moped section in your policy wording.
  2. Check which licence it requires and whether an IDP is mentioned.
  3. Check the engine-size limit and whether passengers are covered.
  4. Save the insurer's emergency number and your policy number in your phone.
  5. Photograph your licence, IDP and passport, and keep copies offline.

What rental damage cover is (and isn't)

Travel insurance covers you; it usually does not cover damage to the rental scooter. Damage and loss of the bike follow the rental's own terms, so ask how scratches, a broken mirror or theft are handled before you pay. See deposits, insurance & damage on rental scooters.

If you have an accident

  • Get medical help first; call the ambulance number 118 or 119.
  • Contact your insurer's emergency line as early as possible.
  • Tell the rental and photograph the scene, the bike and any police report.
  • Keep every receipt and medical document for your claim.

Choose a smaller, lighter scooter if you're new to riding. It keeps you within most policies' engine limits and is easier to control.

Licence rules for foreigners are in Bali scooter rental for foreign tourists; what to do after a crash is in flat tyres, breakdowns & accidents.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does travel insurance cover riding a scooter in Bali?

Often yes, but only if you meet the policy's conditions — usually a valid motorcycle licence plus IDP, a helmet, an engine-size limit and no alcohol. Check your wording.

Will I be covered without a motorcycle licence?

Most policies don't cover riding without a licence valid for motorcycles. It's one of the most common reasons claims are refused.

Does travel insurance cover damage to the rental scooter?

Usually not. Damage to the bike follows the rental's terms; ask before you pay.

What emergency number should I call in Bali?

118 or 119 for an ambulance, and 110 for the police. Save your insurer's emergency line too.
