Temples are the heart of Balinese culture. Visiting them by scooter lets you set your own pace, arrive earlier and stop in the villages along the way. Here's a realistic route around the famous temples, split by region.

How to split the route

DayTemplesApprox. distance from Kuta/Seminyak
Day 1 (west)Tanah Lot, Taman Ayun, Ulun Danu Beratan± 100 km return
Day 2 (central)Tirta Empul, Gunung Kawi, Goa Gajah± 80 km return
Day 3 (east)Besakih, Lempuyang, Tirta Gangga± 170 km return
Half day (south)Uluwatu± 50 km return

Distances are estimates. The east route is long; it's more comfortable to stay a night in Sidemen, Candidasa or Amed.

Temple etiquette

  • Wear a sarong and a sash around your waist; it's best to cover your shoulders.
  • Don't enter areas marked for worshippers only.
  • Women who are menstruating are asked not to enter temple grounds, in line with local custom.
  • Don't stand higher than a priest or offerings, and don't step on canang offerings.

Parking and tickets

Major temples have scooter parking with a small fee and an entrance ticket counter. Carry cash. Full etiquette is in visiting temples by scooter. For the west route see Tanah Lot & Jatiluwih, and for the east east Bali & Lempuyang.

During big ceremonies, roads to temples may close temporarily. Follow the pecalang (village guards) and be patient.

Comfortable bikes for long two-up routes: the NMAX or PCX. Every option at SiapPergi — Bali scooter rental.
